HOW WE BEGAN
In the early 1960's there was a strong wish by the Lutheran families of Geelong for their children to receive a Christian education. St Johns Lutheran Church in Yarra Street then decided to start a Lutheran Primary School in Geelong. The present site at 33 Aberdeen St was purchased from Geelong Grammar School, and in 1962, St John's Lutheran Primary School was officially opened with 2 teachers and 56 pupils.
Due to a strong and ongoing commitment of the Geelong Lutheran community St. John's has continued to grow, change, and develop. This commitment is reflected in the family values and the ever present caring atmosphere that pervades every activity and event at the school. Our School Community continually blesses us by their commitment, care and support. We always enjoy learning of the many successes of our students as they move into Secondary school and adult life.
Today, St John's offers a high standard of education from Kindergarten to Year 6 and has a current student population of 330. We invite you to discover an exceptional place of learning, designed to open a world of growth for your preschool or primary child, where we encourage and nurture the academic, physical, emotional, social and spiritual learning of the individual student.
St John’s has always welcomed and valued the support given by those in the Geelong community wishing to educate their children in a Christian environment.

MULTI-AGING
Multi-aging is a style of classroom organisation with its basis
in sound educational belief that the individual child is important
and learns at his / her own pace. At St John's we feel that the
needs of all our children can be better met through multi-aging
and the benefits it brings, than through traditional single level
classrooms. Our multi-aging classrooms are organised into two classroom
grades across the four Curriculum Standards Frameworks levels in
Primary school. We have:
| Level 1 |
Prep |
| Level 2 |
Grade 1 & 2 |
| Level 3 |
Grade 3 & 4 |
| Level 4 |
Grade 5 & 6 |
Multi-aging gives us a greater organisational flexibility, more
effective planning support and workload efficiency for teachers
and more varied activities for students while giving the children
more time to achieve levels and consolidate learning if necessary.
Children can progress at individual rates of learning suited to
their own development. In the classroom, students are grouped according
to their progress rather than their school chronological year. Children
also develop positive attitudes to other children of different age
groups and relate well to them, similar to the way they do in 'out
of school' situations. We feel this is more natural for them.
